Biden extends congratulatory calls to 11 Democrats on election night

President Joe Biden spent election night speaking with 11 Democratic candidates projected to claim victory in their 2022 midterm elections.
According to the White House, Biden made “congratulatory calls” to Gov.-elect Maura Healey (D-MA), Gov. Dan McKee (D-RI), Sen.-elect Peter Welch (D-VT), Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO), Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL), and Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA).

Spanberger’s race had not been called at the time of the White House’s announcement, and she had been facing a difficult race in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District. Pritzker has been floated in recent months as a potential Biden challenger in the 2024 Democratic presidential primary.

The president currently has no public events scheduled for Wednesday, potentially putting him at risk of breaking a decadeslong tradition of holding a press conference the day after a president’s first midterm election in office.
Heading into Tuesday, Democrats were facing projected losses in the House, while the Senate remained a toss-up. Biden is currently slated to depart Washington overnight Thursday for a weeklong foreign trip, and despite his blank Wednesday schedule, White House officials told the Washington Examiner that “you’ll hear from the president before departure overseas.”
The president spent Monday evening rallying Democratic National Committee officials in two virtual receptions and campaigning in Prince George’s County, Maryland, a district he won with 89% of the vote in the 2020 election.

“You know, one more night, probably another 30 hours nationwide between now and where we are till the last vote is cast. One more night to do everything we can to win it and to keep it going,” Biden said. “Look, if we’re able to hold on, we’re going to be in incredible shape.”
“Imagine what we can do in a second term if we maintain control. I know that sounds like a very high expectation, but I think — anyway, I’m optimistic,” he said during one of the virtual DNC events. “I want to remind you to remind your teams, with so much at stake for our nation, don’t leave a thing — put it all out there. Go full bore till the last poll closes. Make that extra call — not a joke. Knock on that extra door. Most of all, keep the faith. Remind the folks that the power is in their hands.”
