The 2023 Golden Globe Awards tanked in viewership with a near-record low.

NBC’s telecast of the 80th annual Golden Globes drew just 6.3 million viewers Tuesday night, according to Nielsen data. It was the second-smallest audience in the ceremony’s history, and only slightly better than the number of viewers who tuned in for the Globes press conference held amid the 2008 writers’ strike.

Ahead of Tuesday night’s ceremony, NBC touted the ceremony’s return to television after the network chose not to air the event in 2022 as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association dealt with a diversity and ethics scandal.

However, responses across social media indicated dismal interest.

“Probably not,” one Twitter user wrote. “We already know you’re all rich and woke as woke can be woke and will be competing for The Wokest Wokester of the year award. My congratulations to the Champion Jokester!! (jazz hands, jazz hands).”

“Hard pass,” another tweeted.

On Tuesday night, host Jerrod Carmichael addressed criticism over the HFPA’s lack of diversity in years past during his opening monologue.
