House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) claimed that Democrats “overplayed their hand” when it came to the FBI’s raid on Mar-a-Lago after classified documents from the Obama-Biden era were discovered at a liberal think tank.
McCarthy argued that the persecution of former President Donald Trump was political since President Joe Biden allegedly took classified documents out of the White House when he was the vice president.
CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS FROM BIDEN VICE PRESIDENCY SURFACE AT THINK TANK, SPARKING INQUIRY: REPORT
“I just think it goes to prove what they tried to do to President Trump, overplayed their hand on that, that they even had themselves even longer,” McCarthy told reporters Monday night, according to Fox News. “President Trump had never been in office before and had just left, came out. Here’s an individual [who] spent his last 40 years in office and still had this from the vice president.”
At least 10 classified documents were discovered at an office in the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, D.C., in November, Biden’s special counsel to the president told CBS on Monday. The office was used by Biden from 2017 until 2019, when he launched his presidential campaign.
The Justice Department has since launched an investigation into the documents, which allegedly came from Biden when he was the vice president. Under the Presidential Records Act, all presidential and vice presidential documents must be relinquished to the National Archives. Biden’s special counsel Richard Sauber said that the president’s attorneys have fully cooperated with the National Archives and Justice Department since the discovery.
It is not clear what level of classification the documents have been marked, but the discovery occurred three months after the FBI raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and retrieved more than 300 classified documents. The documents discovered in the Penn Biden Center also do not contain nuclear secrets, according to CBS News.
Other conservative lawmakers attacked the president upon the discovery, with Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) asking how the National Archives and DOJ had not noticed the documents were missing.

“It’s been revealed that classified documents were found inside Joe Biden’s private office. Why were they there, why wasn’t the Justice Department looking for these documents, and who had access to them?” Blackburn tweeted.
