Rudy Giuliani subpoenaed for 2020 election fundraising: Report

Special counsel Jack Smith’s office reportedly subpoenaed Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani for records about fundraising efforts in the aftermath of the 2020 election.
Smith’s office sent the subpoena for information about payments Giuliani gathered after the 2020 election in tandem with subpoenas to allies of former President Donald Trump for disbursements received from the Save America PAC, a person familiar with the situation reportedly told CNN.

Giuliani fired off a multitude of lawsuits to overturn election results in the wake of Trump’s loss to President Joe Biden. Save America PAC was established shortly after Trump’s loss and hauled in over nine figures after the election. The political action committee has paid multiple lawyers who have done work for Trump and his allies, though it is not clear how much it may have paid Giuliani.
Previous reports indicated that a federal grand jury helping the DOJ’s Jan. 6-related investigations had been zeroing in on the Save America PAC. This featured scrutiny over whether it beguiled money from people by knowingly peddling false claims about the 2020 election being stolen or dangling false hope of it being overturned.
Smith was tasked by Attorney General Merrick Garland with spearheading the Justice Department’s sprawling investigations surrounding Trump and the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and the classified document ordeal. Smith took the reigns after Trump declared his 2024 presidential candidacy and is expected to weigh possible criminal charges against Trump.
Giuliani previously mustered scrutiny from the Fulton County attorney general’s investigation into the 2020 election, the Jan. 6 committee’s inquiry, and from federal prosecutors in New York about his dealings in Ukraine. The federal prosecutors in New York declined to issue charges against him, and the Fulton County special purpose jury recently wrapped up its final report.
“The mayor is unaware of the specific claims by this so-called ‘anonymous source’ and therefore is not in position to respond,” Guiliani’s adviser Ted Goodman said.

Since Thanksgiving, Smith’s office has contacted a slew of former Trump administration officials and allies. He has also doled out a trove of subpoenas, including to officials in battleground states where Trump allies sought to deploy an alternate electors scheme to thwart his election loss.
