Texas and Florida topped the list of states where people are moving to for the third year in a row.

U-Haul’s annual report for 2022 showed that people continue to head to the Lone Star State and the Sunshine State, while leaving California and Illinois.

The report showed that out of more than two million one-way U-Haul truck transactions, California and Illinois saw the greatest net losses of one-way U-Haul trucks.

“We still have areas with strong demand for one-way rentals,” U-Haul International President John Taylor said. “While overall migration in 2021 was record-breaking, we continue to experience significant customer demand to move out of some geographic areas to destinations at the top of our growth list.”

Texas took the top spot for the second year in a row and for the fifth time since 2016. While Florida came in second in 2022, it notched a top-three spot for its seventh straight year. South Carolina took the third-highest spot.

The report indicated that New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois, and California were among the bottom five states for growth in 2022.

The findings follow 2021’s report, confirming the migration trends. The report noted that U-Haul’s migration trends do not directly relate to population or economic growth.
