Chevalier arrived in a white Ford Explorer as a passenger near the entrance to the CeMar bike trail at midnight on Thursday, the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported. Ian Funke, 37, was near the trail with Chevalier’s ex-girlfriend, according to a criminal complaint.

Chevalier allegedly confronted the pair holding a 10-inch-long buck knife. While attempting to ride away on his bike, Funke was stabbed in the back through his backpack, clothes, coat, sweatshirt, and T-shirt, according to the complaint.

The knife narrowly missed Funke’s lung but caused substantial bleeding. Police arrived on the scene at 12:14 a.m. Friday morning, treating Funke before he was transferred to a nearby hospital, according to a news release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
