Shooter at elementary school in Newport News, Virginia, detained by police

Officials at an elementary school in Newport News, Virginia, confirmed the suspect in a “shooting incident” on Friday is in custody.

Newport News Public Schools confirmed one teacher was injured and that all students are safe in a post on Facebook.

“There has been a shooting incident at Richneck Elementary School. A teacher was injured and transported to a local hospital. All of the students are safe. The perpetrator is in police custody,” the post said.

The Newport News Police Department separately confirmed that only a teacher was injured but said, “The extent of the adult’s injuries is unknown at this time.”

Police are still on the scene investigating the incident, which began around 2 p.m. EST, and said more information will be released later. The identity of the injured teacher and the suspect have not been released.
