President Joe Biden weighed in on the chaos over choosing a new House speaker before departing for Kentucky Wednesday morning, saying the process was “embarrassing” for the United States.
The speaker vote has dragged into a second day, with Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) still working to secure the votes needed for the position.
FOUR REASONS THE NEW REPUBLICAN-CONTROLLED HOUSE IS ALREADY IN DISARRAY
“That’s not my problem,” Biden said on the White House South Lawn. He added that “the rest of the world is looking” while he himself is focused on “getting things done.”
The House will reconvene at noon on Wednesday to resume its leadership elections to select the next House speaker, with lawmakers bracing for what is likely to be another hourslong meeting that may not produce any results.
Lawmakers adjourned just before 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday without selecting a speaker, as no candidate was able to garner the majority vote needed to secure the leadership position. McCarthy, who has positioned himself as the heir to take the speaker’s gavel, remains confident he will be elected when all is said and done, though he conceded it may take several days.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked several times about the situation on Tuesday afternoon and promised that the executive branch would not get involved.
“The president served as a U.S. senator for 34 years, and he understands how this process works,” she said. “He certainly will not insert himself in that process.”
