Trevor Bickford charged with attempted murder of NYPD officer in New Year’s Eve machete attack

The suspect involved in a recent attack on several police officers during New York City’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration has been charged with attempted murder.
Trevor Bickford, 19, the suspected attacker, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder of an officer and two counts of attempted assault following the attack early Sunday morning. Bickford is believed to have traveled to New York City from Maine, where FBI agents reportedly entered his home on Monday, according to Fox News.
The New York Police Department and the FBI are handling Bickford’s investigation, which involves his possible ties to Islamic extremism. The suspect had converted to Islam prior to the attack and was being watched by the FBI’s counterterrorism task force in the weeks ahead of the attack, with a tipster claiming that he had expressed interest in going to Afghanistan, a high-level police source told Fox News Digital.

In a press briefing from Sunday, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell claimed the suspect approached an officer and tried to strike him over the head with a machete. The suspect then struck two additional officers in the head with the weapon.
“One of the officers fired their service weapon, striking the subject in the shoulder,” the commissioner said in a press conference.
All three of the officers were moved to Bellevue Hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition after the incident, the commissioner said.
