Bernie Sanders says Biden doesn’t need a cognitive test to convince voters

.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) discouraged President Joe Biden from taking any sort of cognitive test.

Sanders appeared on CBS Mornings to express his stance against the presidential criteria. The 82-year-old was asked whether Biden should take a cognitive test to qualm criticisms of his mental acuity amid his 2024 presidential campaign.

“No. Once you enter that business, we need all of these criteria because before you can run for president — today it’s age and tomorrow it’s this and tomorrow it’s that,” Sanders said. “This is what a democracy is.”

Biden, 81, is the oldest sitting president. Should he win reelection, he would be 86 at the end of his second term.

“If you don’t like him, don’t vote for him, for whatever reason,” Sanders said. “But I don’t think you should have that criteria.”

Meanwhile, Sanders is contemplating his fourth term in the Senate. While he hasn’t announced a reelection campaign, Sanders has raised $535,000, according to his campaign finance report, and his campaign has reported spending above that.

Still, Sanders is only the second-eldest sitting senator behind Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who is 90 years old. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) isn’t far behind, at 81 years old, but he recently raised speculation on his future in Congress after he announced he will be stepping down as the Senate Republican leader.
