EXCLUSIVE — National Republicans are launching their latest attack against Democrats over the Biden administration’s border policies, claiming the surge in illegal immigration at the southern border has caused a rise in crime nationwide.
The National Republican Congressional Committee released a new ad on Tuesday, highlighting a number of high-profile crimes carried out by illegal immigrants in recent weeks. One of the most high-profile instances is the death of college student Laken Riley, who was killed near the University of Georgia last week.
Jose Ibarra, an immigrant from Venezuela who was previously arrested in 2022 for illegally crossing the border, has been charged with her murder.
The ad also hit out on the rising number of Chinese immigrants who have entered the country illegally over the last year, nearly reaching a record high.
“When illegal migrants come to our country to commit violent crimes or Chinese nationals rush to enter, the border is no longer just a crisis — it’s a deadly threat to every American family,” NRCC Rapid Response Director Macy Gardner said in a statement. “Extreme Democrats caused this with their radical open-border policies, and it’s why ‘immigration’ is now Americans’ top concern.”

The ad comes after the U.S. Border Patrol announced last week it has apprehended more than 6,400 undocumented immigrants with criminal convictions in fiscal 2024 alone.
The latest attack also comes as border security has emerged as a top campaign topic ahead of the 2024 election, with immigration being the top concern for GOP primary voters in early-voting states. Republicans have long dominated the border conversation, especially as the country has experienced a surge in illegal immigration under the Biden administration.
