Trump says his mugshot and indictments are helping him court the black vote

Former President Donald Trump claimed that all of his legal drama, including indictments and a mugshot, is helping him win the black vote this November.

At the Black Conservative Federation Friday night, Trump said that black voters are able to connect with him more because he has allegedly been unfairly targeted by the United States legal system, which is a plight he says the black community can relate to.

“I got indicted for nothing, for something that is nothing. They were doing it because it’s election interference, and then I got indicted a second time, and a third time, and a fourth time,” Trump said. “A lot of people said that that’s why black people like me, because they have been hurt so badly and discriminated against, and they actually viewed me as being discriminated against.”

The former president added that great evil can come from corrupt systems like the United States judicial system, and understanding that is another reason he believes black people like him.

“Some of the greatest evils in our nation’s history have come from corrupt systems that try to target and subjugate others to deny them their freedom and to deny them their rights,” Trump said. “I think that’s why the black people are so much on my side now because they see what’s happening to me happens to them.”

Trump said the support from black voters, who typically vote for Democratic policies, also translated to an embrace of his mugshot.

“My mug shot — we’ve all seen the mugshot, and you know who embraced it more than anybody else? The black population,” Trump said. “You see black people walking around with my mugshot, you know, they do shirts, and they sell them for $19 apiece. It’s pretty amazing — millions, by the way.”

Trump also accused President Joe Biden of being racist, citing his friendship with segregationists such as Strom Thurmond, whom Biden praised earlier this week for being able to compromise.

Biden’s campaign has not responded to Trump’s claim that the president is racist, but the Biden campaign slammed Trump for his own “racist” past.

“The audacity of Donald Trump to speak to a room full of black voters during Black History Month as if he isn’t the proud poster boy for modern racism,” Jasmine Harris, black media director for the Biden campaign, said. “This is the same man who falsely accused the Central Park 5, questioned George Floyd‘s humanity, compared his own impeachment trial to being lynched, and ensured the unemployment gap for Black workers spiked during his presidency.”
