Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) claimed Thursday that former President Donald Trump’s control over the Republican Party will not last forever, as “a**holes come and go” in positions of leadership.
The New Hampshire governor, a vocal critic of Trump, acknowledged that the Republican Party is very much the party of Trump at the moment, as the former president is at “the top” of the GOP. However, he added that Trump won’t be able to maintain the stronghold, as “we all have our time.”
“We do, so I’m very optimistic about the Republican Party,” Sununu said at Politico’s Governors Summit. “I’m very optimistic about where we’re going as a country.”
Sununu also brushed off claims that democracy in the United States is being “eroded,” telling those saying this to “stop.” He noted that the U.S. has gone through many ordeals in its history, such as the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic, but that the U.S. stood strong through these events.
“Let me put it in a different way: A**holes come and go, but America is here to stay!” Sununu said, drawing applause from the audience.
Sununu has spoken out numerous times against Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, arguing that he is not the right candidate for the Republican Party. On Sunday, he warned that President Joe Biden would be Trump in a hypothetical rematch, which would pave the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to become the next president.

In the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential primary, Sununu endorsed Nikki Haley, the former United Nations ambassador. The New Hampshire governor has argued that Haley would “trounce” Biden if she won the Republican Party’s nomination, while pitting Trump against Biden would lead to a “nail-biter” election.
The next primary for the Republican Party is scheduled for Saturday in Haley’s home state of South Carolina, where she previously served as governor. Last month, Trump bested Haley and the other Republican candidates in the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary.
