Bride-to-be set to miss wedding after Southwest cancellation

A woman waiting to leave from St. Louis Lambert International Airport is set to miss her own wedding after Southwest Airlines canceled her flight Tuesday.
Katie Demko is supposed to be married Friday in Belize, but plans changed while she was getting ready to board her flight, she said.

“As we were getting ready to board, the captain came out, gave a speech, and basically told us the flight was canceled,” Demko said.
The bride-to-be and her family were stunned, according to Demko.
“Southwest actually booked me on a flight for Jan. 2, but my wedding is tomorrow, Dec. 30,” she said.
At least 15,700 Southwest flights have been canceled since the beginning of the travel disruption began last week amid severe winter weather.
“A systemic failure of Southwest Airlines leaders to modernize, support, and staff its operation leaves every front-line employee, pilots included, tired of apologizing to our passengers,” the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association said.

The airline hopes to have the problem turned around by Friday.
“Right now, it looks like a pretty smooth operation as we head into this transition tomorrow to allow us to resume operations on Friday at our normal schedule, which is a big step up,” Southwest Chief Operating Officer Andrew Watterson said.
