The Missouri Freedom Caucus urged lawmakers to finish taking on a bill that would modify the process for approving constitutional amendments before attending the Super Bowl victory parade for the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday.
“Unless the MO Senate perfects SJR74 today to protect the MO Constitution from being bought off my liberal billionaires, no Senator should attend the @Chiefs Super Bowl parade tomorrow. We should stay & do our jobs,” the newly formed conservative group of Missouri House and Senate members wrote on social media on Tuesday.
Senate Joint Resolution 74 is a culmination of Republican-sponsored bills trying to change the process of how votes are counted on a constitutional ballot issue. Under the legislation, all proposed constitutional amendments would need to receive a majority of the votes cast statewide, as well as a majority vote in a majority of the state House districts.
A state Senate committee recently fast-tracked the bill, and it’s set to be heard on the state Senate floor on Tuesday. The legislation could affect ballot measures this year as Republicans rally against an abortion rights group hoping to advance an amendment that would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution. Missourians for Constitutional Freedom are working to gather about 171,000 signatures by May to place the topic on the ballot.

“The MO Senate is debating SJR74 2 protect the MO constitution from woke groups who want 2 legalize abortions & take away our 2A rights.Conservative Senators want to debate the bill until it passes.Other Senators want to adjourn & go to the Chiefs parade. What should the senate do?” the caucus wrote.
