Twitter CEO Elon Musk’s declaration that the social media platform will provide space for “reasoned questioning of the science” was met with both praise and disdain.
“New Twitter policy is to follow the science, which necessarily includes reasoned questioning of the science,” Musk tweeted Wednesday.

The notion stirred discussion that suggested skepticism is the true pursuit of science.
Writer Katherine Brodsky tweeted: “Also known as the scientific method,” adding that “no, ‘scientific method’ does not mean spewing random nonsense. It means people w/ specialized knowledge/training following rigorous methology [sic], devoid of political bias, financial incentives, or populism. But gift of wonder is available to anyone.”
Professor, author, and evolutionary behavioral scientist Gad Saad also sarcastically responded to Musk’s tweet, writing, “The science is anything that His Eminence Lord Fauci says it is. His Excellency is science.”
Musk replied to Saad, saying that “anyone who says that questioning them is questioning science itself cannot be regarded as a scientist.”
Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton also noted that the new Twitter policy means “bad news for transgender extremism, covid totalitarians, and climate alarmists.”
Musk’s new policy garnered the support of NASA Earth Cartography & data visualization lead Joshua Stevens.
“This is fair and reasonable,” Stevens wrote. “And if any scientist tells you otherwise, never let them wax poetic about curiosity and wonder ever again.”
The notion to question science was met with disdain by New York Times contributor Wajahat Ali, however. Ali called it “something a really dumb person would tweet.”
Journalist Ashton Pittman also likened the new policy to “batsh** clown car conspiracy.”

Musk’s policy announcement follows his calling attention to the social media platform’s past amenability to COVID-19 regulations and Dr. Anthony Fauci.
On Tuesday, Musk claimed Twitter employees had an internal messaging group called the “Fauci Fan Club.” He also recently joked that his pronouns were “prosecute/Fauci.”
