Former President Donald Trump’s 91 indictments and various civil cases gave him a significant fundraising advantage, and he’s used those donor funds to pay his hefty legal fees.Â
New figures filed with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday show Trump’s two political arms — Save America PAC and Make America Great Again PAC — spent about $50 million in legal bills in 2023. The expenses cover some of Trump’s advisers and associates across his legal defense for four indictments and civil trials.Â
The Save America PAC spent $11 million in the final half of 2023 on Trump’s civil fraud trial brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James seeking $370 million from the former president, his two sons, and two other co-defendants. The biggest payment went to Chris Kise & Associates, which was paid $3.3 million, and Continental PLLC, a law firm employing Kise, a Florida-based lawyer, was paid $3.6 million.Â
The law firm of Clifford Robert, Robert & Robert, was paid $3.9 million from Save America to represent Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, executive vice presidents at the Trump Organization accused of tax fraud and falsifying business records.Â
California-based attorney Harmeet Dhillon was given $4.61 million in early 2023. Dhillon, who challenged Ronna McDaniel for Republican National Committee chairwoman last year, will represent the case against Trump trying to bar him from state ballots under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, including the Supreme Court’s review of the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to remove him from the GOP primary ballot.Â

Alina Habba and Michael Madaio were paid more than $4 million in 2023 for the defamation case brought by columnist E. Jean Carroll. This week, a Manhattan jury said Trump must pay Carroll $83.3 million for repeatedly defaming her. Trump was found liable for sexual abuse and defamation of Carroll by another New York jury in May 2023. That jury awarded Carroll $5 million in damages. Carroll accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a department store dressing room in the mid-1990s.
Other hefty lawyer fees included $2.6 million to John Lauro, who is representing the former president in the federal indictment accusing him of overturning the 2020 presidential election. Attorneys at Blanche Law, a New York firm working on multiple criminal cases of Trump’s, were paid a little less than $2.3 million.
