Five dead, dozens injured in South Korea tunnel fire

Five people are dead and dozens of others are injured after a fire burned in a tunnel near the South Korean capital Thursday.

Journalist Jaehwan Cho said the fire erupted at the second Gyeongin Highway soundproof tunnel in Gwacheon, South Korea. A local news outlet reported that 37 people were injured in the fire and up to 44 vehicles were destroyed.

Raphael Rashid, a self-identified Seoul-based freelance journalist, reposted a video of the massive fire, writing, “Initial findings showed the fire started after a bus and a truck collided. It quickly spread to the tunnel, causing massive clouds of smoke.”

Gwacheon is just south of Seoul.
