Google is apologizing after a controversial definition of “Jew” made its way onto the search engine Tuesday.

“Jew” was defined as a verb meaning to “bargain with someone in a miserly or petty way.”

The word’s origin was “in reference to old stereotypes associating Jewish people with trading and money lending.”

That definition was available Tuesday morning and remained so until roughly 1 p.m.

Google officials apologized on behalf of the search engine for the posting.

“Our apologies,” Google Search Liaison Danny Sullivan tweeted.
