Stimulus update: Michigan sending rebate checks averaging $550 to families in 21 days

.

In three weeks, officials in MichiganĀ will send outĀ checksĀ worth an average of $550 to approximately 700,000 households as part of a recently enacted expansion to the working families tax credit.

Eligible taxpayers in the Great Lakes State will get a check that is equal to the difference between the 6% working families tax credit on an eligible resident’s 2022 tax refunds and the 30% that the credit is now worth, thanks to legislation raising the credit signed in 2023.

The Michigan Department of Treasury says that eligible Michiganders will automatically receive the payment and that no additional paperwork is necessary.

Distribution of the check will begin on Feb. 13, with payments going out on a rolling basis over a five- to six-week period. The state claims that the combined value of theĀ tax creditĀ will provide an average of a $3,150 tax refund to 700,000 families in the state for tax year 2022.

ā€œBy quintupling the working families tax credit, we’re putting an average of $550 back in the pockets of 700,000 Michigan families ahead of schedule,ā€ Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) said in a statement about the expanded tax credit in December.

ā€œThis directly benefits half the children in Michigan, and moms and dads can use this extra money at tax time to pay the bills, put food on the table, and buy school supplies,ā€ she added.

The increased 30% rate for the working families tax credit will be included on regular tax refunds beginning with tax year 2023. Additional information about Michigan’s expanded tax credit is available on the state’sĀ website.
