New York City Councilwoman Shahana Hanif called on Mayor Eric Adams to give the illegal immigrants flooding the city more resources and expand āright to shelterā policies.
āFrom a very young age, I saw myself as a fighter, and thatās what led me to the City Council,ā Hanif, chairwoman of the councilās committee on immigration and co-chairwoman of its progressive caucus, told both the press and onlookers outside a Midtown Manhattan church.
Fighters need to ācontinue the legacy of a city that continues to be a place where refugees will migrate to,ā the equity-driven councilwoman said.
New York City was established as a place where refugees can seek safety and a new future, according to Hanif.
āRight now, as folks escape slavery, conscription, political turmoil, economic and social injustices, we have to be a city that says this is an opportunity for us to expand right to shelter,ā she said.
āThis is an opportunity for us to see our schools as an opportunity to recruit and retain bilingual educators, bilingual guidance counselors and social workers, and librarians.ā

It is up to leaders like Adams to secure and continue the cityās ālegacy,ā Hanif said.
āMayor Adams, you, you can and have the time to eliminate these cruel, inhumane, unjust directives now.ā
