South Carolina residents who filed their 2021 tax return by October only need to wait five more days to receive a rebate of up to $800.

The rebate’s amount depends on a person’s 2021 tax liability, which is the amount left over after subtracting credits from the income tax that the person may owe. Filers with a tax liability equal to or over $800 will receive the full amount, according to the South Carolina Department of Revenue, while those who owe money will have that amount subtracted from the rebate.

People who filed their 2021 SC1040 tax return back in October will receive the rebate before the end of the year. But those who missed the deadline because of Hurricane Ian have until Feb. 15, 2023, to file their tax returns, and will receive their payments in March.

Anyone who received a 2021 refund by direct deposit will receive the $800 rebate in the same bank account. The payment can be tracked online, but people will need either their Social Security number or the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number from their SC1040 form to access the tracking website.

South Carolina is one of several states that are trying various forms of financial relief for residents who are struggling with surging prices on nearly all products due to persistently high inflation.
