A suspect was taken into custody early Tuesday after breaking into the Colorado Supreme Court building in Denver after opening fire on responding police officers, according to local law enforcement.
Just after 1 a.m. local time, law enforcement officers were dispatched to the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center in downtown Denver. Once inside, they discovered a suspect who proceeded to open fire at them, a spokesperson with the Denver Police Department told local ABC news affiliate Denver 7.
HOW THE SUPREME COURT COULD DECIDE THE FATE OF TRUMP’S 2024 BALLOT ACCESS

Officers did not fire back at the suspect but were able to apprehend the suspect, who was not identified, and take him into custody around two hours after police arrived at the scene, according to the report.
The Colorado Supreme Court has come under intense scrutiny since the justices ruled 4-3 on Dec. 19 to disqualify former President Donald Trump from the state’s Republican primary ballot under an insurrection clause of the 14th Amendment, saying he incited the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Justices at the state’s high court found that Trump could not be on the ballot under a provision of the amendment that states anyone who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” cannot run for public office, reversing a lower court decision that found the provision of the 14th Amendment did not apply to presidents.
Trump is expected to make his appeal of that decision by the end of the day on Tuesday. Last week, the Colorado Republican Party asked the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the state high court’s decision.
Details about the arrest of the suspect in Colorado remain unclear, and authorities haven’t revealed the motivations that prompted the suspect to break into the judicial building.
