Green Day alters ‘American Idiot’ lyrics to bash Trump

The rock band Green Day used a televised New Year’s Eve performance Sunday night to change the lyrics to one of their most popular songs — and throw shade on former President Donald Trump in the process.
Appearing on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, Green Day’s lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong, belted out a slightly altered verse of the band’s hit song, “American Idiot”— replacing the verse “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda,” to “I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda,” in apparent reference to the former president and his “Make America Great Again” slogan.

It’s not the first time the famed rock band has used music as a platform to voice political views.
Green Day first released the song “American Idiot” in 2004 as an attempted broadside of President George W. Bush and the Iraq War. The song was an instant hit, and the album with which it shares a name won the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
Neither the band nor Armstrong have shied away from espousing their political views in the years that followed and have used their platform to voice their public disdain for the Trump administration.
During a 2016 performance at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, Green Day yelled, “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA” during their televised performance of the song “Bang Bang.”
They have also sold limited-time anti-Trump merchandise.

By all indications, Green Day has no intent of piping down anytime soon. The band will be on tour through most of 2024 with other notable rock bands, including the Smashing Pumpkins and Rancid.
They are also slated to release their 14th album later this month, which includes a lineup of sure-to-provoke songs, including singles such as “The American Dream Is Killing Me” and “Look Ma, No Brains!,” among others.
