Supplemental Security Income recipients are set to receive a rare second payment at the end of December, with the upcoming payment being slightly higher than the first payment from earlier this month.

Eligible recipients will receive a payment of $914 on Dec. 30 after already receiving $841 on Dec. 1, bringing the total amount of benefits to $1,755. The upcoming payment will kickstart the SSA’s 2023 payment schedule to ensure that recipients receive their January payment before the first of the month, according to the SSA.

The payment will be slightly higher than the first payment from earlier in December due to a cost-of-living adjustment made by the Social Security Administration, with the Dec. 30 payment being 8.7% bigger than the first payment from this month. The adjustment will be the highest adjustment in the SSA’s history since 1981, when the COLA was 11.2%, according to the administration.

The biggest adjustment made by the SSA was made in 1980, when the adjustment was 14.3%. The only years when there were no adjustments made were 2010, 2011, and 2016.

Essential persons, meaning someone who lives with a person receiving SSI and provides necessary care, will also get a second payment this month on Dec. 30, this one being $458 after receiving a payment of $421 on Dec. 1. Additionally, eligible couples will receive a second payment of $1,261 on the same day as the other recipients.

The double payment that the SSA occasionally gives offset the months in which it sends no payment, ensuring that recipients receive 12 payments a year, according to the schedule. The months in which recipients received no payments this year aside from December include January, May, and October because the first of these months occurred on a weekend.

In 2023, recipients can expect to receive double payments in March, June, September, and December because April, July, and October will occur over the weekend, and Jan. 1 is a holiday, according to the SSA’s schedule.
