FATE OF TRUMP TAX RETURNS TO BE SET TUESDAY BY DEMOCRATS AFTER MULTIYEAR QUEST
The committee will decide on Tuesday whether to release Trump’s tax returns publicly after years spent trying to obtain them. The six years’ worth of returns may be partially or fully disclosed depending on the results of the meeting. Though the meeting will be behind closed doors, a transcript will be released to the public afterwards.
Since taking over the committee in 2019, Democrats have been undergoing a legal battle to obtain Trump’s tax returns, using a law that allows the government to procure any United States citizen’s tax returns. Trump refused to abide by the committee’s request, saying the request was a political hit job.
The Democrats triumphed in the political battle after a Federal District Court judge and federal appeals court ruled in their favor, the New York Times reported. The committee, which will be taken over by Republicans next month, is now set to vote on what to do with the returns.
“Nearly four years ago, the Ways and Means Committee set out to fulfill our legislative and oversight responsibilities and evaluate the Internal Revenue Service’s mandatory audit program,” Rep. Richard E. Neal (D-MA) said. “As affirmed by the Supreme Court, the law was on our side, and on Tuesday, I will update the members of the committee.”

Republicans warn that the act gives a dangerous precedent. By allowing the committee to acquire Trump’s tax returns on a political basis, the Treasury Department was “unleashing a dangerous new weapon” that could “target political enemies” by disclosing information that might “embarrass and destroy them,” Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) said in a statement obtained by the outlet.
