Residents of California can expect to receive direct payments worth up to $1,050 as part of a state program intended to give residents relief from inflation that has struck all of the United States.

The payment, titled the Middle Class Tax Refund, will be sent out to eligible Californians, with the final waves of direct deposits and state-issued debit cards set to be sent by the end of January 2023. Certain recipients, however, can expect to receive their payment sometime between Monday and New Year’s Eve, according to the state government’s website.

The recipients who can expect their payment within the next two weeks are people who did not receive the Golden State Stimulus, a payment given to Californians in the first half of 2021, and whose last names begin with the letters L through Z. Other non-GSS recipients whose last names began with letters A through K already received their payment from Dec. 5 through Dec. 17.

The other people who are still waiting for this payment are direct deposit recipients who have changed their banking information after they filed their 2020 tax return. They will receive their payment between Dec. 17 and Jan. 14 of next year.

Any California residents who were deemed eligible to be claimed as dependents for taxes in 2020 are not eligible for this offer.

To qualify for this payment, applicants must have been residents of California for at least six months during the 2020 tax year, have filed their 2020 taxes by Oct. 15, 2021, and have earned less than $250,000 a year for single filers or less than $500,000 a year for couples in that year.

Single filers who make between $125,000 and $250,000 a year with no dependents will receive a payment of $200, a lower payment compared to what other filers may get. Married filers who make $150,000 or less and have dependents will receive the highest payment available from this refund at $1,050.

Direct deposit payments will be made to any taxpayers who filed their 2020 state tax returns online and received their tax refunds by direct deposit. For everyone else who qualifies for this payment, Middle Class Tax Refund debit card payments will be given to them via the mail, according to California’s Franchise Tax Board.
