Trump’s gag order in NY civil fraud trial temporarily lifted: Appeals court

Former President Donald Trump‘s gag order in his $250 million civil fraud trial was temporarily lifted by a New York appeals court Thursday.
Judge David Friedman, of the state’s intermediate appeals court, temporarily stayed the gag order, meaning Trump can now freely comment about court staff while a more lengthy appeals process plays out. The ruling also applies to Trump’s attorneys in the case.

The order comes after Trump’s attorneys filed an emergency lawsuit Wednesday against Judge Arthur Engoron, who imposed the limited gag order on Trump last month in response to Trump’s critical rhetoric about the judge’s principal law clerk.

“His extraordinary expansion of that order both limits and chills advocacy on Petitioners’ behalf and precludes counsel on pain of contempt from making a record of misconduct and bias in a public courtroom,” Trump’s counsel wrote in the emergency suit.
