White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre repeated her condemnation of “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War” after the Monday criminal referrals the House Jan. 6 select committee sent to the Justice Department for former President Donald Trump.

Jean-Pierre briefed reporters roughly one hour after the committee announced several proposed charges for Trump in relation to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, including obstruction of an official proceeding; conspiracy to defraud the United States; conspiracy to make a false statement; and inciting, assisting or aiding/comforting an insurrection.

JAN. 6 COMMITTEE URGES JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TO PURSUE CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST TRUMP

The first question she faced involved the charges, but Jean-Pierre repeated a line reporters have “heard me say this many times.”

“We’ve been very clear from the beginning that what we saw on Jan. 6 was the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War, and the president has been very clear our democracy continues and remains under threat, and we all have a part to protect it,” she continued. “The committee has been doing important bipartisan work to get to the truth of what happened on that very day so we can we can make sure that that doesn’t happen again, so I’ll leave it there.”

President Joe Biden‘s press secretary was also asked about the four House Republicans referred to the Ethics Committee for failure to comply with subpoenas, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who may be the next speaker of the House.

“That’s a very good question, and what I would say to you is that you would have to ask those very Republicans to speak for their own actions here and have them explain themselves,” Jean-Pierre concluded. “I’m not going to get into the weeds of the investigation from here and the process, but again, you should have them explain themselves on this very issue.”
