Supplemental Security Income recipients are scheduled to receive a rare second payment at the end of the month, giving them a combined total of $1,755 in SSI benefits for the month of December.
Eligible recipients will receive a payment of $914 on Dec. 30 after already receiving $841 on Dec. 1. This payment will mark the start of the Social Security Administration’s 2023 payment schedule, giving recipients their January payment in advance to ensure that they receive it before the first of the month, according to the SSA.
The payment will be slightly higher than the payment made on Dec. 1 due to a cost-of-living adjustment made by the SSA to keep up with inflation. Because Dec. 30’s payment will be the first 2023 payment, it falls under the adjustment and will be 8.7% larger than 2022’s monthly payment.

Essential persons, meaning someone who lives with a person receiving SSI and provides necessary care, will also get a second payment this month on Dec. 30, this one being $458 after receiving a payment of $421 on Dec. 1. Additionally, eligible couples will receive a second payment of $1,261 on the same day.
The adjustment for 2023 will be 8.7%, making it the highest adjustment in the SSA’s history since 1981, when the COLA was 11.2%. The biggest adjustment made by the SSA was made a year prior, in 1980, when the adjustment was 14.3%. The only years when there were no adjustments made were 2010, 2011, and 2016, according to the SSA.
The double payments that the SSA occasionally gives offset the months in which it sends no payment, ensuring that recipients receive 12 payments a year, according to the schedule. The months in which recipients received no payments this year aside from December include January, May, and October because the first of these months occurred on a weekend.

In 2023, recipients can expect to receive double payments in March, June, September, and December because April, July, and October will occur over the weekend, and Jan. 1 is a holiday, according to the SSA’s schedule.
