Youth Concussions
FILE – This Aug. 4, 2012 file photo shows new football helmets that were given to a group of youth football players from the Akron Parents Pee Wee Football League, in Akron, Ohio. It’s not just football. A new report says too little is known about concussion risks for young athletes, and it’s not clear whether better headgear is an answer. The panel stresses wearing proper safety equipment. But it finds little evidence that current helmet designs, face masks and other gear really prevent concussions, as ads often claim. One of the nation’s largest youth football organizations has launched an investigation into allegations of racial abuse committed earlier this month at a Florida tournament.

Pop Warner said it is aware of reports that a man affiliated with the Highlands Ranch Mountain Lions used a racial slur targeted at the coaching staff of the Hamden Hurricanes during a Division II 12U quarterfinal game, according to a statement released Friday.

“A video has come to our attention showing adults, reported to be associated with a Pop Warner team, using racist and threatening language toward coaches from another team,” the statement read. “The disturbing behavior shown in the video is inconsistent with our code of conduct and the expectations we have of our adult volunteers.”

In light of the alleged incident, the league will hold an “investigative hearing” in the coming days that might necessitate “disciplinary action,” the league said.

“If the panel finds that any of the adults engaging in the verbal assault are, in fact, associated with a Pop Warner team they will be subject to disciplinary action, including suspension from Pop Warner activity,” the statement continued.

The incident under review occurred after the game between the two teams at a local hotel where both teams were staying, according to a report.

In a video of the incident, at least one man can be heard shouting racial slurs.

“One thing is clear: the abhorrent conduct and language exhibited in this video are unacceptable. Our organization is committed to a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all young people and their families,” Pop Warner said.
