Stimulus update: Deadline to file taxes in 13 days for rebate of up to $400 in Virginia

There are less than two weeks for residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia to file their 2022 state income tax returns to qualify for an upcoming tax rebate of up to $400.
Only 13 days remain until the Nov. 1 deadline for taxpayers to file their taxes in the Old Dominion. The deadline is the extension granted to Virginia residents who did not file their taxes by the usual May 1 deadline. The Virginia Department of Taxation has not released a timetable for the upcoming tax rebates.

Not all taxpayers in the state will be eligible for the rebate, but those with a tax liability are among those who will be eligible. The state has not provided taxpayer-specific eligibility at this time. The rebates will be worth up to $200 for individual filers and up to $400 for joint filers.
This tax rebate program was approved as part of the commonwealth’s annual budget, which Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) signed into law in September. This set of tax rebates comes a year after Virginians received tax rebates of up to $500 in 2022. The governor reminded residents to file their taxes by the Nov. 1 deadline to receive their tax rebate in a statement earlier this month.

“As Virginians continue to face inflation and high prices as a direct result of policies out of Washington, D.C., these rebates are an important step going into the holiday season to help Virginians keep more of their hard-earned money for gas, groceries, and essentials,” Youngkin said in a statement.
“My administration has delivered over $5 billion in tax relief to Virginians, and we remain committed to lowering the cost of living for working families and veterans across Virginia. It’s their money, not the government’s,” he added.
