New details have emerged about Wednesday’s killing of two Mississippi police officers, revealing they were shot by a woman after they called child protective services.

Sgt. Steven Robin, 34, and Officer Branden Estorffe, 23, were killed around 4:30 a.m. after they had spoken to Amy Anderson, 43, during a welfare check, the Bay St. Louis Police Department said during a Thursday news conference.

The pair had spoken to Anderson, who was in her car, for approximately 30 minutes outside of a Motel 6 before she shot them, police said.

Anderson’s child was also in the vehicle, and it was reported that the mother shot the officers after a call was placed to CPS.

The 43-year-old suspected shooter was also found dead at the scene when officials arrived, and it was initially stated that she had shot herself.

However, investigators now believe it is possible that one of the fallen officers had fired the bullet that killed her.

An autopsy is expected to clarify Anderson’s cause of death.

“This is a very sad situation, and our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to the families of our lost officers,” Bay St. Louis Mayor Mike Favre said.
