Public does not want 2024 Biden-Trump rematch: Poll

Most do not have the desire to see a presidential rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in 2024.
A poll conducted by CNN found that 62% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents want to see a candidate other than Trump, and 59% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents want a different candidate than Biden.
While 6 out of 10 Republican respondents said they would prefer their party nominate a different candidate other than Trump, 66% said they would vote for him in the 2024 election. Among those who prefer another candidate, 47% specified an alternate candidate, with 38% naming Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
TRUMP NOW TRAILS DESANTIS IN 2024 PRIMARY IN MULTIPLE POLLS
Trump is trailing DeSantis in a hypothetical matchup, 52% to 38%, according to a Wall Street Journal poll. Polls are indicating Republicans shifting away from Trump thanks to a less-than-expected performance by the GOP in the midterm elections, in which many of his endorsed candidates across all levels failed to win their races.
Trump’s favorability rating did not change significantly, with 60% having an unfavorable view of the former president. A broad majority of respondents believe Trump’s views and policies are too extreme, including 45% of Republican and Republican-leaning independents.
Those hoping for a second term for Biden have rebounded slightly since CNN’s summer poll, when only 25% preferred he seek reelection. The outlet reported that, since January, there has been an uptick in Democratic-leaning voters of color hoping that the party chooses someone other than Biden (from 43% to 53%), compared to white voters (57% to 63%).
Younger voters would prefer the Democrats choose a candidate other than Biden, with 74% of those 35 and younger hoping to see a different name on the ticket in 2024. Those writing in specific alternative candidates have chosen Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg (5%), California Gov. Gavin Newsom (4%), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) (4%), Vice President Kamala Harris (3%), and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (2%). Newsom is the only one named that has not put in a bid for president for a prior election.
While Democrats see more of a divide on whether to reelect Biden, Republicans are mostly united at 94% for hoping that Biden does not receive a second term.

GOP leaders have called a 2024 Trump run the “worst scenario” for Republicans and, if his candidacy splits the party, a certain landslide win for Democrats, allowing them to keep control of the White House and Senate and possibly regain the House.
The reoccurring poll was conducted from Dec. 1-7 with a national sample of 1,208 adults with plus or minus a 3.6 percentage point margin of error.
