Stimulus update: Maryland teachers to receive one-time $1,000 bonus checks in two days

Christmas is coming early for employees at a Maryland school district this Friday, as they will be given a bonus payment of $1,000.
The bonus will be given to employees at Anne Arundel County Public Schools and is intended as a payment that received the full backing of the Board of Education. The money will be pro-rated based on an employee’s full-time equivalency, and it will be sent to all permanent employees aside from those who are on a leave of absence by Dec. 16, AACPS says.

“No school system can be great without great people,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Bedell wrote in a letter to AACPS staff. “As I have said before, the work you are doing in the face of some stiff challenges is incredible. No matter your role in our school system, our students benefit every day from your dedication and passion. Please don’t ever forget that.”
The payments will be funded from the money that the school district saved from vacancies it experienced across the system, which means that AACPS will not need to request more funding to cover these bonuses.
Bedell himself will not accept the bonus.
Employees were also informed of a healthcare premium holiday on Dec. 28, in which no healthcare premiums will be deducted from employees’ pay on that day. This is occurring due to the level of AACPS’s healthcare fund balance.

“I fully realize that the bonus is a small gesture of appreciation. However, it is critically important to me and to the Board of Education that we continue to find ways to simply say ‘Thank You,'” the superintendent said.
