Lauren Boebert calls for focus on policy and not bomb-throwing now GOP is in House majority

Fresh off her confirmed narrow victory, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) called for more “discipline and targeted focus” on policy rather than partisan flamethrowing.
Boebert struck a conciliatory tone while thanking supporters for putting her over the finish line in her surprisingly tight race and vowing to be a “good listener, to take a deep breath, and help take the temperature down in D.C.” in a video posted to Twitter.

“It’s our responsibility now, and my responsibility personally, to take the opportunity you’ve entrusted me with and make you proud, to lead with strength, to lead with grace, and to work hard every day to represent you,” Boebert declared. “We, as Republicans, must now prove we deserve to be in the majority and to stand for the policies to help every American to overcome challenges.”

A member of the conservative Freedom Caucus, Boebert had made a name for herself as a member of the right flank in the Republican caucus with a penchant for hurling broadsides and mockery at progressive stars such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (R-NY). Earlier this year, she famously heckled President Joe Biden during his State of the Union address.
Her Colorado district was supposed to have a double-digit advantage for Republicans, according to FiveThirtyEight, but she barely won reelection in the midterm elections with a razor-thin edge over Democrat Adam Frisch, which forced an automatic recount. Ultimately, she edged him out by 50.06% to 49.89%. Frisch conceded defeat before the recount.
“I haven’t lived a perfect life. I haven’t taken a common path to get here, far from it, in fact. But the lessons I’ve learned along the way motivate me to stand up for our conservative principles, to be a strong voice for freedom, and always do everything I can to help secure our God-given rights,” Boebert continued in her video statement before snuggling with her child.

Boebert also touted her efforts to help put the country “back on track” and “put a hard stop to the hard left move toward socialism.” Previously, she declined to commit to backing House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) in his bid to become speaker of the House but refrained from ruling that out either.
McCarthy is facing a rocky road to the speaker’s gavel amid several Republican defections. Given the party’s slim majority in the House, he can only afford a few defections, and the GOP does not appear to have a viable alternative lined up.
