WATCH: Ben Carson says ‘wokeness’ trumps education’s purpose after school removes his name

Ben Carson chalked up the removal of his name from a high school in Detroit to “wokeness spreading throughout our community” and society reaching “the point where political ideology trumps the whole purpose of an educational institution.”
The Detroit School Board voted to change the name of Ben Carson High School of Science and Medicine, removing its connection to the retired neurosurgeon who was the secretary of Housing and Urban Development during the Trump administration, according to former HUD chief of staff Andrew Hughes.

“It’s very sad that we’ve reached the point where political ideology trumps the whole purpose of an educational institution,” Carson told Fox News host Sean Hannity Monday. “And we’re seeing this wokeness spreading throughout our community to the destruction of our community.”
“How does it do any good for us to demonize people with whom we disagree and to teach that to our children at a time when the math scores are down, the reading scores are down, academic performance is down?” Carson added.
Hannity noted that in 2018, Detroit school board member Cleve R. Wootson Jr. said the school bearing Carson’s name was “synonymous with having Trump’s name on our school in blackface.”
Carson dismissed the ideology pointing to systemic failures of schools that graduate students despite being “functionally illiterate.”
“We’re failing them by pushing this ideology,” Carson said.

The retired neurosurgeon also explained that is one reason why his American Cornerstone Institute seeks to provide the Little Patriots Program, a free program offering a survey of the nation’s history without ideological influence.
“We want to change this whole narrative, and we need an inoculation to indoctrination, and that’s why we’ve created that program,” Carson said of the Little Patriots Program.
