Stimulus update: Deadline to claim payment worth up to $675 for Montana residents in 11 days

Montana residents have from now until Oct. 1 to apply for a property tax rebate of up to $675 per taxpayer.
Residents can apply for the property tax rebate for the next 11 days either through the online portal set up by the state or via a paper form.

“Property taxes are too high, which is why we prioritized and secured immediate property tax relief for Montanans this legislative session. Now, it’s time to build on reforms to reduce the burden of property taxes over the long term,” Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) said in a statement about the tax rebate.
To qualify for the tax rebate, Montana taxpayers must have owned and lived in a residence in the state for at least seven months. Another requirement for the tax rebate includes having been billed and having paid for the property taxes on the residence in tax year 2022.
The rebate residents receive from the program is equal to the amount paid in property taxes for the taxpayer’s “principal Montana residence,” with a limit of $675 for the rebate payment. Each property can be used for only one tax rebate.

The state says the rebates are being sent within 30 days of filing the application through the online portal or up to 90 days after submitting a paper application.
An identical rebate program for 2024, based on tax year 2023, was passed by state lawmakers when the 2023 program was approved and will send out rebates to eligible residents on an identical basis next year.
