Biden and G-7 leaders reaffirm ‘unwavering support’ for Ukraine

President Joe Biden and the other G-7 leaders issued a joint statement Monday reaffirming support for Ukraine “in the face of Russia’s illegal, unjustifiable, and unprovoked war of aggression.”
The statement came on the heels of a Monday virtual meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and all countries pledged to continue supporting Ukraine “for as long as it takes” to repel the Kremlin’s continued offensive.

“Russia’s war of aggression must end. To date, we have not seen evidence that Russia is committed to sustainable peace efforts,” the statement reads. “Russia can end this war immediately by ceasing its attacks against Ukraine and completely and unconditionally withdrawing its forces from the territory of Ukraine. We welcome and support President Zelenskyy’s initiative for a just peace.”
The G-7 leaders also stated their intent to “continue to galvanise [sic] international support to help address Ukraine’s urgent short-term financing needs” and make the International Monetary Fund “central to this effort.”
Just moments after the statement was released, Biden told reporters that the United States was not considering sending new U.S. troops to Europe to aid Ukraine, as was reported earlier on Monday.

“Are we sending troops to Ukraine? No,” Biden said during a Toys for Tots event in Arlington, Virginia, Monday. “We’re sending materiel like we have. Billions of dollars.”
