Snow Cal: Huge ‘bowling bowl’ storm hammers California with wintery blast

Parts of California were filled with snow over the weekend after a massive storm delivered as much as 48 inches of snow in the Lake Tahoe area.
The Sierra Nevada got the brunt of the snowfall, with the intense storm causing intense winter weather conditions two weeks before Christmas.

At the University of California, Berkeley, Central Sierra Snow Laboratory, 43.5 inches of snow was recorded in a 48-hour time span, with 37.8 inches occurring in a 24-hour span.
On Saturday, parts of Interstate 80 were held up due to snow conditions and vehicle spinouts on the roads. The roads were eventually cleared, but for a time, cars required chains or snow tires to traverse.
The snow storms were described by the National Weather Service as causing conditions like an atmospheric “bowling ball,” while in other parts of the Golden State, heavy rain battered down, causing some flooding and numerous travel delays for residents.

The storms in California are one of several that are expected to batter the United States this week as the stormy weather is expected to move east and hit parts of the Midwest, including North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota, with rain and snow on Tuesday.
“The most widespread and substantial impacts will occur as the system ejects into the Central Plains tomorrow as a developing low-pressure center tracks eastward. This will result in heavy snow and possible blizzard conditions across portions of the Central and Northern High Plains through Wednesday,” the National Weather Service said in an alert Monday.
