Former Vice President Mike Pence said he supports the idea of an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, should House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) launch one when the House of Representatives returns from recess next week.

Pence praised the efforts by House Republicans to investigate Biden and his son Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings while Joe Biden served as vice president, claiming it is a “benefit to the nation” that House Republicans are “following the facts.” The inquiry would be related to the foreign business dealings.

“I think, particularly at a time when so many Americans have lost confidence in equal treatment under the law, so many Americans, understandably, are concerned about a dual standard of justice in this country,” Pence told Fox News on Friday. “Now, more than ever, we need House Republicans to follow the facts, bring the facts to the American people, and if an impeachment inquiry facilitates that I would hardly support it.”

The investigation into the Biden family’s business dealings is being led by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and includes whether Joe Biden benefited from Hunter Biden’s position on the board of the Ukrainian firm Burisma while serving as vice president.

“There are so many questions about Joe Biden’s involvement and connection to his son’s businesses when he was vice president of the United States,” Pence said. “I must say, you know, I can’t relate. When I was vice president, my son wasn’t sitting on the board of foreign corporations, he was sitting in the cockpit of the F-35 and flying for the Marine Corps.”

McCarthy has teased an impeachment inquiry, but other conservatives in the lower chamber are seeking to vote on the president’s impeachment without the process of an inquiry.

Pence claimed the possible impeachment proceedings against the president are different than when then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) launched impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump in 2019 and 2021. He was impeached but acquitted by the Senate in each case.

The first impeachment proceeding occurred due to a phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in 2019, which was related to the Biden family dealings in Ukraine. The House impeached him on two counts, abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The second impeachment against Trump, which saw some bipartisan support, was related to the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol in 2021, which sought to disrupt the legal certification of the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The House will return from its summer recess on Tuesday, Sept. 12, and the Senate returned to the Hill on Tuesday.
