Applications for a property tax rebate of up to $675 per taxpayer are open to residents in Montana through the end of the month.

The online portal for residents to apply for the tax rebate opened last month and will remain open until Oct. 1. In addition to the online portal, eligible Montanans can claim their rebates via a paper form.

JOBLESS CLAIMS DROP TO LOWEST LEVEL SINCE FEBRUARY AS LABOR MARKET KEEPS GOING

To qualify for the tax rebate, applicants must have owned and lived in a residence in the state for at least seven months, and they must also have been billed and paying for the property taxes on the residence during the 2022 tax year. The state also says only one rebate per household is permitted under this program.

“Property taxes are too high, which is why we prioritized and secured immediate property tax relief for Montanans this legislative session. Now, it’s time to build on reforms to reduce the burden of property taxes over the long term,” Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) said in a statement on the tax rebate rebate in July.

Rebate amounts are dependent on how much was paid in property taxes by the taxpayer for their “principal Montana residence,” with a maximum of $675 for this rebate.

The rebate will be sent to eligible residents within 30 days of filing the application on the online portal or up to 90 days after a paper application has been filed. Officials in the Treasure State say an identical rebate program will also be available to eligible residents next year based on tax year 2023.
