California’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is set to wrap up payments for September in three days to low-income families and individuals who need assistance purchasing groceries.
Families who receive SNAP, or food stamps, can see benefits up to $1,691 in the Golden State. The federal program starts issuing payments on the 1st of the month and goes until Sept. 10. Payments will be distributed depending on the recipient’s case number.

For example, if a case number ends in 1, California beneficiaries can expect to see their CalFresh benefits on Sept. 1. If a case number ends in 2, CalFresh benefits will be available on Sept. 2. By Sept. 10, those with a case number ending in zero will receive their payment.
The amount of SNAP benefits households receive is dependent on multiple factors, including household size, income limits, and additional assets, with the average payment in California per person coming in at $196 per month. The maximum payment for a household of one is $281, while the maximum SNAP amount for a household of four is $939, and the maximum amount for a household of eight is $1,691. For each household member past eight, the program adds up to $211.
In California, the monthly gross income must be at or below 130% of the federal poverty level. For a family of one, there’s a monthly income limit of $1,473. A household of three’s limit is $2,495, and a household of six’s limit is $4,029.

Benefits are issued through an EBT card, and funds are reloaded each month. SNAP can be used to buy groceries at participating grocery stores, farmers markets, and some online retailers. Food products such as bread, dairy products, meat and poultry, and drink items can all be purchased through SNAP. Pet food, alcohol, and household items such as soap and paper products are ineligible.
Approximately 13% of California’s population receives CalFresh assistance, amounting to nearly 5 million Californians each month, according to 2022 data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
