Cuts to the nation’s food stamp program enacted earlier this year are only affecting four states, far from the sweeping reform that Republicans had pushed, according to an Associated Press review. As a result, it’s unclear if the law will realize the estimated $8.6 billion in savings over 10 years that the GOP had touted. (AP Photo/David Goldman, File) David Goldman

California food stamps, also known as CalFresh under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, will wrap up distribution in September in four days.

SNAP payments in the Golden State start on the 1st of the month and run through Sept. 10. Payments will be distributed depending on the recipient’s case number. For example, if a case number ends in 1, California beneficiaries can expect to see their CalFresh benefits on Sept. 1. If a case number ends in 2, CalFresh benefits will be available on Sept. 2. By Sept. 10, those with a case number ending in zero will receive their payment.

Food products such as bread, dairy products, meat and poultry, and drink items can all be purchased through SNAP. Pet food, alcohol, and household items such as soap and paper products are ineligible.

Around 13% of California’s population receives CalFresh assistance, amounting to nearly 5 million Californians each month, according to 2022 data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
