Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) pointed out a lack of research behind gender transition therapies for minors.
Crenshaw appeared on Fox News’s America Reports on Friday to commemorate his state enacting bans on puberty blockers and gender transition procedures beginning that same day. A group of activists subsequently filed a lawsuit to block the law on July 13, but it went into effect when the attorney general’s office appealed the decision, automatically pausing an injunction on the law. The representative lauded the new law because, as he explained, there don’t seem to be any research-backed benefits of allowing minors to undergo these therapies.

“So, let’s start with the so-called science of transitioning a minor into a different gender. There is no science backing that up. There is no science showing that there’s these benefits associated with doing these therapies, whether that’s blockers, hormone therapy, or actual surgical interventions. In fact, it’s quite the opposite,” Crenshaw said. “All the systematic reviews, which is that the gold standard of evidence-based care which looks at all of the different studies in person together and analyzes them properly, show that there is little to no evidence that there’s any benefits to this whatsoever.”
“So, you’re imposing a very, very drastic change of physiological permanent change on a child, and you can’t show any benefits,” Crenshaw went on. “That’s a really big problem.”
While Crenshaw expressed his pleasure in the Texas law, he admitted the need for a federal-level bill, which he has introduced on the House floor. His proposal would remove funding from children’s hospitals that engage in gender-affirming care. He has previously echoed similar sentiments on the House floor, disputing that gender-affirming care for minors could prevent suicides.

Instead, the Texas representative published an editorial that went into further detail, citing psychiatric comorbidities. According to his resource, 70% of those who seek treatment at gender clinics have other diagnoses.
Crenshaw has met with famous minors who have detransitioned from gender-affirming therapies, such as Chloe Cole, who he says were provided “pseudoscience studies” that convinced them to pursue therapy.
