Vivek Ramaswamy said his age sets him apart from Donald Trump in a rare example of the 2024 candidate creating daylight between himself and the former president.

Ramaswamy has been among the fiercest defenders of Trump on the 2024 campaign trail, aside from Trump himself. When he was asked what, if anything, distinguishes his candidacy, Ramaswamy said his age, half that of Trump’s, puts him at an advantage.

“I have fresh legs,” the 38-year-old biotech entrepreneur told Fox News host Sandra Smith Friday. “We are reaching the next generation of young Americans. That is why I can win this election in a landslide in a way that no other candidate can.”

Ramaswamy is just three years older than the age required to run for president.

Trump, by contrast, is 77 years old, and while voters are less worried about his ability to take on the role of president than they are about the current commander-in-chief, 80-year-old Joe Biden, more than half still say he is too old to serve another four-year term effectively.

Concerns over the ages of high-ranking elected officials were further stoked this week after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) suffered a freezing episode during which the 81-year-old struggled to respond to questions. A similar incident occurred during a Senate press conference earlier this summer.

Following McConnell’s most recent episode, 51-year-old presidential candidate Nikki Haley labeled the Senate “the most privileged nursing home in the country.

“I mean, Mitch McConnell has done some great things, and he deserves credit, but you have to know when to leave,” she said.

Haley has made age a repeated part of her messaging, pointing to the possibility of Vice President Kamala Harris becoming president if Biden were to die in office. She’s further called for competency tests to be required for politicians over the age of 75, a category Biden, Trump, and McConnell would fit into.
