UNC lockdown: Police give all clear after reports of a shooting

Police at the University of North Carolina have declared the situation all clear after there were reports that an armed and dangerous suspect was close to campus.

The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, was put on high alert Monday afternoon when police issued an alert of an armed and dangerous person on or near the campus. After an hourslong lockdown, police declared the situation all clear, and a source told WRAL that one UNC faculty member was killed.

“All clear. All clear. Resume normal activities,” UNC Police announced on X, the social media outlet formerly known as Twitter.

The university’s alert system announced that classes were canceled for the rest of the day and that students should avoid Caudill Labs.

UNC has not confirmed the death of the faculty member, who was reportedly shot. The Washington Examiner has reached out to UNC, Chapel Hill.

Police released a photo of the suspect, asking students to avoid him and to call 911 if they see him.

A WRAL reporter said the situation prompted a heavy police response, with over half a dozen police cars making their way toward the campus.
