Tensions on the field between the Argentina and Netherlands boiled over Friday into a brawl as the two sides met in the quarterfinal of the 2022 World Cup.

The clash occurred in the 89th minute when Argentina’s Leandro Paredes clashed with the Netherlands’ Nathan Ake in a brutal challenge for the ball.

Following the challenge, Paredes fired the ball into the Dutch bench, and as he walked away, Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk decked him with a chest bump.

More players from each team joined in, and chaos ensued.

“Leandro Paredes just booted that ball into the Netherlands dugout,” BBC commentator and former English defender Martin Keown said. “He has caused a riot there. He is lucky. The foul was a booking in itself.”

Eventually, both sides regained their composure, and the game resumed with Argentina ahead 2-1, though the Netherlands’ Wout Weghorst would score a last-minute equalizer to send the game into extra time.
