Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom said Americans need to understand President Joe Biden made a very bad deal to bring WNBA star Brittney Griner home.

“We just traded a basketball player for Viktor Bout, who people call the ‘Merchant of Death,'” he said. “We just sent back pretty much a terrorist who is responsible for thousands of lives and sold illegal weapons in Africa, in Asia, and everybody knows he is one of Russia’s most notorious arms dealers.”

“I would not exactly call it a fair trade. We should not give back a terrorist who could actually hurt America in the long run,” Freedom said. “Let’s not forget about the Marine veteran Paul Whelan because he is also being held in Russian custody, and he was pretty much left behind in the swap.”

Whelan “protected the country,” according to Freedom, and President Joe Biden left him in Russia.

Griner had arguably shown very little appreciation for her country in the time leading up to her detainment in Russia. She had stated she would not play in WNBA games if the national anthem were played and questioned whether or not the anthem should even be played at all.

Freedom pointed out that Griner’s sentiment was one shared by many of his teammates in the NBA.

“I told them, ‘Listen, I will get your tickets to different countries out there, like Russia, like Iran, like China, so you guys can see what dictatorship looks like,'” he said.

Athletes like Griner should feel “lucky and blessed to live in a country like America.”
