Stimulus update: Direct one-time tax rebate checks worth up to $1,300 being sent out now

Minnesota is sending out tax rebates of up to $1,300 per family to eligible residents in the state beginning this week.
The rebates will be sent first to those who enrolled in direct deposit, with those payments expected to be put in residents’ bank accounts by the end of the week. Paper checks, for those not enrolled in direct deposit, will be shipped out through September, according to the state.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue says the payment will appear in bank accounts as “State of Minnesota 2021 Tax Rebate Program.”
The rebates vary based on the status of the taxpayer. Married couples who file jointly receive a $520 rebate if they make a gross income of $150,000 or less, while individuals making $75,000 or less will receive $260 rebates.
In addition to those base amounts, $260 is added to each rebate for each dependent a taxpayer claims up to three.

The nearly 2.1 million rebate payments are being touted by the state as being sent out as students are returning to classes, providing relief to families buying school supplies.
The state does not allow the rebate to be tracked but says people should contact the Minnesota Department of Revenue if they have not received the payment by October.
